Play Therapy
“Birds fly, fish swim, and children play.” -Dr. Gary Landreth
Hi! I am glad you are here!
Being a parent means we are carrying our own story to raise another human being. Sometimes it is sweet, and sometimes it is overwhelming, especially parenting after our own trauma. That is why I am here for you and your family.
I work with parent as a team to support the child. The first session is a parent meeting without our child's presence. After every 4-6 individual play therapy session, we will have a regular parent meeting to be on the same page.
What does it look like in the initial parent meeting?
In the parent meeting, we will discuss our children's developmental history, family dynamics, current struggles in every life domains, and address your concerns.
What does it look like in the regular parent meeting?
In the regular parent meeting, at times, we will celebrate the joys and victories together (hurray!). At times, I will provide parent coaching and psychoeducation. At some other times, I will practice self-regulation and co-regulation skills with you, so we can be the regulated adult to support our child at home.
What does it look like in a play therapy session?
Play therapy is a research-based approach based on the neuroscience and brain development. Joanna was originally trained in Child-centered Play Therapy, and later trained in applying EMDR to adolescents and children and trauma-informed play therapy. The play therapy session will be tailored into your child's needs based on the developmental age and history.
Play is the natural language that a child speaks to express feelings and thoughts. Toys are the vocabulary that are selected consciously and unconsciously during play. In the playroom, every toy are purposefully selected. To know more about play therapy, you can click the link below to watch the introduction from Association for Play Therapy:
